Eri cocoons are open-mouthed with discontinuous filament and cannot be reeled. They are spun — after the pupa is extracted for consumption or egg production, or after the moth has emerged of its own accord, which is what makes eri ahimsa silk. Spinning is concentrated in Palasbari, Bijoynagar, Goalpara, Kokrajhar and Udalguri in Assam, and most of the yarn is consumed within the state.
